WHY ERASERHEADS CONCERT SUCKS

By Carlos H. Conde

Note: All references to the names of tobacco companies and their brands have been replaced with ******.

Like millions of Filipinos, I am an Eraserheads fanatic. No other Filipino band had such a musical impact on me. I still think “Ang Huling El Bimbo” is the greatest Filipino song ever written.

So when news broke that the Eheads are having a reunion concert, I was ecstatic. “Sa wakas, aaahhh aay…,” a line in “Sa Wakas” in the album Circus, played in my head.

But I won’t line up to watch this concert. In fact, I will declare here that, perhaps for the first time, the Eheads, in agreeing to do this reunion concert, did something really stupid, if not downright unethical. Their breakup, I totally get. But this… this just sucks.

Assuming that all that has been written about this supposed concert is true — that the main sponsor is ******, that all four of them will be there, that they will perform for 45 minutes, and that each of them will get millions – I think the Eraserheads are doing a great disservice not just to the generation of Filipinos who were weaned on their music but also to the younger ones who are bound, I am certain, to love their songs.

Let me explain.

Reunion concerts, as a concept, are nice. They’re like a long-delayed encore. Unlike the usual concerts, reunion concerts tend to be a more intimate, more profound experience between the band and their followers. It cements this communion between the band and those who adore them. As if to say, “We had such a great time, let’s do it again. Isa pa nga.”

To be sure, reunion concerts are conceptualized so that some people will make money. Nothing wrong with that. Ely Buendia and the others, I think, deserve the reported 10 million pesos that they would receive from ******. Heck, I think they probably deserve more.

But my beef against their supposed Aug. 30 concert, however, is that it smacks of shrewd, even manipulative marketing, by ******, the makers of ******. The Internet is awash in stuff about this event. Not a few hinted that this is viral marketing at work. In fact, the buzz is so loud that ****** has earned so much marketing points already. It can actually cancel the event and still walk away happy.

My suspicion is that ****** is doing this because beginning this month, cigarette companies are no longer allowed to have advertisements in print, radio and television. And without advertisements, products like cigarettes would be nearly impossible to sell.

Although the new law explicitly prohibits cigarette companies from sponsoring events such as concerts, they can, however, still be part of the event. And this being the Philippines, it’s not so hard to imagine the many ways ****** can insinuate itself into events like this.

Indeed, I’m fairly sure that the buzz this concert has been getting on the Internet is part of ******’s strategy. It’s actually simple: they first spread this as rumor that was easily spread by the gazillion of Eheads fans out there. Soon after, the rumor took a life on its own, with the mainstream media picking it up as a legitimate news item. Soon, according to many accounts, ****** came out and confirmed the rumor as fact.

Strictly speaking, ****** didn’t do anything illegal. It did not advertise anything. (In fact, on its website where you are supposed to register in order to get a ticket to the concert, there’s no mention of the cigarette brand at all, except in the URL). It did not promote anything in the media by way of press releases or advertisements.

What ****** did was to create the buzz, which later turned into an event that found its way to the mainstream press. In the process, ****** got the attention that it craves to sustain interest in its deadly product. (And there’s no doubt that ****** would try to push its brand during the concert itself.)

Intelligent as they are, the Eraseheads must realize by now that they are being used by ****** to peddle a product that has been proven to be so fatal as to force the government to ban their advertisement and promotion in the popular press. I hope that, as the Eheads enjoy the millions that they will earn after this so-called reunion concert, they can sleep better at night.

What really depresses me about all this is that the Eraseheads are really good and they didn’t have to do this sort of thing. After they disbanded, life for each of them apparently went on. We, the fans, were sad to see the group go but we, too, have moved on. Every once in a while, we would pop their CDs into our stereos and we would take another trip with these four wonderful, jolly people. When the group died, their music lived on. Many of us didn’t have to mourn their demise. That, to me, is what’s so special about the Eraserheads. I not only communed with these four – I bonded with them. So, in a way, I feel betrayed.

It would be fantastic if they’d reunite in a concert or once more as a group. But not under these circumstances. Like the cigarette the Eheads are peddling in this concert, watching them perform again not as musicians but veritable promo boys for ****** will leave a bad taste in the mouth.

And if they went ahead with this concert, I will probably not enjoy their music the same way again. Which is heartbreaking because I was planning to collect all their albums and give them as gifts to my sons years from now.

TULOY ANG LIGAYA.

KE CHIPPY,ALBATROSS,O DATU PUTI ANG MAG-SPONSOR NG CONCERT,WALA NAMAN PAKIALAM ANG MGA FANS NG E-HEADS.THEY’LL GO AND SEE THE FAB 4 AND ENJOY THE NIGHT AWAY.IT’S A ONE-NIGHT AFFAIR ONLY THAT’S WHY DIE-HARD FANS WILL TROOP TO THE FORT TO HEAR THEIR IDOLS BELT OUT ONE HIT TUNE AFTER ANOTHER.

I’VE NEVER BEEN TO A MARLBORO SPONSORED CONCERT BUT I DON’T THINK MARLBORO OR THE E-HEADS WILL FORCE THE AUDIENCE TO BUY MARLBORO OR SMOKE ‘EM.THEY WILL SUGGEST THAT YOU PATRONIZE THEIR PRODUCTS VIA POSTERS,BANNER’S,ETC.PERO HANGGANG DOON LANG.ITS UP TO THE FANS TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANT TO BE SWAYED BY MARLBORO.

I DON’T THINK E-HEADS FANS ARE THAT DUMB TO BE INFLUENCED BY THE SPONSORS.SOME,MAYBE,LIKE 8-10% OF THE CONCERT-GOERS WILL BE INFLUENCED TO SMOKE (PERSONALITY DISORDER NA YUN),BUT THE REST WILL JUST BE THERE TO HEAD BANG OR NOD THEIR HEAD IN APPROVAL FOR EVERY TOYANG,ALAPAAP,MAGASIN,ETC. THAT THE E-HEADS WILL DISH.

CASE IN POINT.WHENEVER I GO AND SEE A PBA GAME LIVE IN ARANETA (WITH ALL THE CORPORATE POSTERS AND BANNERS PLASTERED ALL OVER THE VENUE),I DON’T GET INFLUENCED OR PRESSURED TO BUY THEIR PRODUCTS.I WENT THERE TO SEE A GOOD GAME.SAME WITH THE CONCERT,FANS WOULD JUST LIKE TO SEE THE FAB 4 FROM PEYUPS PERFORM."IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC…IT’S STILL ROCK AND ROLL TO ME".

AND IF YOU WANT TO PROTEST,GO AHEAD THAT’S YOUR RIGHT.BUT WE HAVE A DESIGNATED VENUE FOR THAT.TO SAY THAT THE E-HEADS CONCERT SUCKS OR THE E-HEADS ARE STUPID BECAUSE MARLBORO IS SPONSORING IT IS WAY OUT OF LINE.I’M NOT SAYING THE AUTHOR DOESN’T HAVE A POINT (ACTUALLY HE HAS A VALID POINT) BUT HE’S BARKING ON THE WRONG TREE.INSTEAD OF TELLING US FANS WHAT TO DO (AS IF WE’LL LISTEN TO YOU ANYWAY ),JUST GO TO THE CONGRESS TOGETHER WITH YOUR FELLOW MORAL ADVOCATES,AND LOBBY HARD FOR A FLAWLESS LAW THAT WILL PROHIBIT TOBACCO COMPANIES FROM SPONSORING SPECIAL EVENTS.IT’S SIMPLE AS THAT.

OTHERWISE,I’D JUST CALL YOU A GIMIKERO…RIDING THE POPULARITY OF THE E-HEADS JUST TO GET A FEW HITS ON YOUR BLOG.

The ‘Red List’ is dangerous to your health

August 7th, 2008 by doctorj201

Don’t get trapped in Philip Morris’ "Red List". It’s dangerous to your health, according to tobacco control advocates.

The "Red List" is cigarette manufacturing firm Philip Morris’ new way of promoting their products through the Internet. Those who register on the "Red List" get invited to special events that give away cigarettes and drinks to guests.

"The lives of people, especially the youth who will sign up on the Red List will definitely be in the red, meaning stepping into the danger zone," Dr. Maricar Limpin, executive director of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines (FCAP), told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Limpin said getting your name on the "Red List" will make you "an easy target" of tobacco advertisements and promotional materials of Philip Morris Philippines Manufacturing, Inc., manufacturer of Marlboro filter cigarettes.

The registration site is being used for the reunion concert of the Eraserheads this August. Fans who wants to get hold of free simply register on the "Red List".

Limpin said FCAP has been monitoring the registration site, and the group has learned that even non-smokers, most of them young, have already applied for free tickets to the concert.

She said that by putting the online registration site, the tobacco company is violating Republic Act 9211 (RA9211), which regulates "packaging, use, sale distribution, and advertisements of tobacco products."

"It is a promotion of the tobacco product (Marlboro) because you cannot get into the Red List without going through the website. Definitely, it is a promotion of their product," she added.

The registration site has the usual tobacco company health warning, "Cigarette Smoking is Dangerous To Your Health." To register, you need to give the company some personal information, including name, address, home phone, cellular phone numbers, and e-mail address.

Don’t sponsor E-heads concert

Philip Morris Philippines may get away with the online registration site, but the Department of Health (DOH) said the tobacco company can be charged criminally if it pushes through sponsoring the reunion concert.

"I have a warning to the tobacco company. If we are able to prove that this concert is actually sponsored by you, Philip Morris, definitely we will train our guns on you for violating the law," DOH Undersecretary Alex Padilla announced at a press conference at the World Health Organization headquarters in Manila.

Padilla said the government will go after Philip Morris officials for allegedly violating the law. "If they’re foreigners, they shall be deported after serving sentence."

He clarified they will only go after officials of the tobacco company, not the organizers of the concert.

“That is why we only appeal to the organizers of the event to hopefully disassociate themselves from the [tobacco] company. Carry on with the event without the need of a tobacco company’s sponsorship,” Padilla said.

He said the organizers should lure people, especially the youth, to “some more productive endeavor rather than smoking."

Padilla agreed with Limpin’s interpretation of RA 9211 when it comes to promotions.

He said the law prohibits tobacco advertisements in all forms of mass media, including the Internet.

Limpin said that since the law does not give exceptions, all kinds of promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products are banned.

The law, which took effect in 2003, states in section 24 that tobacco company sponsorships are banned starting July 1, 2008.

Padilla said even if the Eraserheads signed a contract before the date, the deal will still be covered by the law because tobacco companies were “advised of the effectivity of the provision.”

Philip Morris public affairs and communications manager Dave Gomez told abs-cbnNEWS.com in a telephone interview that the company is "not yet ready to comment" on Padilla’s threat to file criminal charges for violation of RA 9211.

Gomez also declined to comment on Padilla and Limpin’s statements that product promotion on the online registration site is in violation of RA 9211.

However, in a previous interview, the tobacco company said that promotions through the Internet is not specifically banned by RA9211.

Proof of sponsorship

During the early weeks when news about the reunion concert circulated, there was no clear information on who was organizing and sponsoring the event.

The mystery about the sponsor ended after Louis Camilleri, chairman and chief executive officer of Philip Morris International, sent a reply letter dated July 31, 2008 to Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Camilleri said in the letter: “The promotional event you refer to is an invitation-only event, not open to the general public. It is restricted to our trade partners and to adult smokers who can obtain an invitation by registering on our adult-only access website, where they must provide proof of age through a government issued ID.”

Padilla said that with the letter, it would be easy for the government to prove that Philip Morris is sponsoring the “promotional” event, which allegedly violated RA 9211, even if the target are adults.

"It doesn’t matter whether it is for adults-only event. The point is there is an advertising ban. Advertising can refer to any age group or any sector. The intention [of the law] is to stop their promotion because it affects the youth," he said.

He added there have been studies that tobacco advertisements are targeting the youth as "replacements" for smokers who have quit the bad habit or died of smoking.

Shun Philip Morris

During the press conference, Limpin called on former Eraserheads members — Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro — to cut the tobacco company’s ties with the concert.

Limpin, who admitted that she and some of FCAP members are Eraserheads fans, said the group doesn’t intend to become "spoilers" of the much-awaited reunion concert.

“I’m not telling the band not to push through with the concert,” she said, explaining that her group is only against the tobacco sponsorship.

Padilla also urged the band members to “disassociate themselves from a product that is deadly or a killer.”

Limpin told reporters at the press conference that according to rumors, the band members have been or will be paid P2 million to P10 million by Philip Morris for the concert.

Follow Alicia Keys

She said the Eraserheads should do what pop artist Alicia Keys did only last month.

In a statement issued by Myers last month, he announced that Keys had turned down a Philip Morris-sponsored concert in Jakarta, Indonesia.

“US singing star Alicia Keys has set a positive example that should be followed by musicians and entertainers worldwide by demanding the withdrawal of tobacco industry sponsorship of her July 31 concert,” Myers said in the statement.

Keys’ decision came after Myers’s group urged her to shun the tobacco sponsorship.

In the statement, Myers also mentioned the Eraserheads concert and asked Philippine authorities to look into the promotional event’s possible violation of RA 9211.

Limpin said instead of letting themselves be used by Philip Morris, the Eraserheads should do smoke-free gigs or concerts.

She said the band, which has been called the “Beatles of the Philippines,” can do bigger concerts without a tobacco company’s sponsorship.

She added that if the Eraserheads concert pushes through with Philip Morris as a major sponsor, the band will be unconsciously luring non-smokers and the youth into tobacco smoking.

"Considered the most influential band in the country, Eraserheads has become a role model of sorts of our young. I hope they will rise up to the challenge, do more than play music and help young Filipinos reach their potential, which they cannot achieve when they’re ill or worse, dead," Limpin said.

A call to all overseas Filipinos

A call to all overseas Filipinos

by Harvey S. Keh
Contributor

JUST a few weeks ago, I listened to a National Situationer report given by the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB), the socio-political arm of the Jesuits here in the Philippines.

SLB is known to be one of the most credible institutions who can give an honest to goodness analysis of what is the real state of our country and in their report they emphasized the following:

a.) Yes, the country’s economy continues to grow and, in fact, we have one of the highest growth rates in Asia. However, despite the economic growth, more than 25 million Filipinos continue to languish in poverty.

b.) 62 percent of Filipinos actually die without even having the chance to be seen by a healthcare professional. To make things worse, medicine prices are 5 to 45 times higher here in our country compared to other countries in Asia like Thailand, Pakistan and India.

c.) 3.7 million families continue to be homeless in our country despite efforts being done by non-profit organizations, such as Gawad Kalinga.

d.) P1.2 trillion had been lost to corruption in the last 5 years.

e.) Out of 10 Filipino students who enter Grade 1, less than 2 will be able to finish College.

f.) The brain drain continues in our country as 121 Filipinos leave the country every hour. By the end of this year, we can expect that there will be approximately 8.5 million Filipinos abroad.

These sad realities made me discern the reason why we continue to remain a poor country, despite the fact that we have such a beautiful country blessed with the brightest people in the world. Is it because many of our best people choose to work and live abroad?

Was Conrado De Quiros correct when he mentioned in one of his columns that the middle and upper classes of our country couldn’t care less about what happens because we always have an escape hatch of migrating and living abroad when all else fails in the Philippines? I don’t think that these are entirely correct assumptions since I continue to believe that majority of Filipinos still want to see genuine change and reforms in our country.

Many Filipinos living and working abroad whom I have talked to and corresponded with via email still continue to hope and dream that they will one day be able to come back and live in a Philippines that can provide them and their families with the right opportunities to live a just and prosperous life.

In the end, I think everyone will agree with me that one of the major reasons why we are here is the fact that we continue to elect poor leaders who would rather protect vested interests of their own families and those that have supported them in the last elections.

It’s depressing to note that the reality of Philippine politics is that a good, competent and decent person cannot be elected to power if she or he doesn’t have millions of pesos to use in the campaign.

Of course, we have already seen some exceptions to this “rule,” in the persons of Pampanga Governor Eddie Panlilio, Isabela Governor Grace Padaca and Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo. All three have clashed with moneyed and well-entrenched political dynasties and have come out victorious. But their victories remain only at the local level and it seems that we will need a more herculean effort to finally elect a President that will not become beholden to a few individuals, interests and families.

According to some friends who have had experience in being part of a national campaign, they say that you need at least P1 billion to have a chance at the Presidency.

Is it impossible then to elect a President that will not become beholden to a few wealthy families and will genuinely serve the interests of Juan dela Cruz?

I don’t think so but if we want that to happen, we should all make that happen starting with the growing Filipino middle class who are mostly living and working abroad.

Imagine if every single Filipino living and working overseas will pledge to donate at least $5 each to support an upright, ethical and God-fearing candidate who has a proven track record in public service, then that would amount to $42,500,000 or a whooping P1.9 billion!

This candidate could then have a fighting chance of being our next President and if she or he wins, she or he can govern properly without being beholden to a few people and their vested interests. As soon as we have enough pledges from Filipinos all over the world, we can then do something similar to a primary process to select the right person whom we can all support.

I propose this idea to every Filipino working or living overseas who still dreams of a new Philippines. I think it’s time that we all invest in choosing the right President for our country. We have less than two years to go before the 2010 National election. Thus the time to act is now. The power to choose our next President should not be in the hands of a few but rather it should be with each and every Filipino.

If you believe in this idea and proposal, please send me an email at harveykeh@gmail.com so we can work together in choosing the right leader for our country who will run a government that will genuinely work towards promoting the common good.

PREMONITIONS

July 20th, 2008 by doctorj201

LAST JUNE 12,2008 WHILE I WAS TINKERING WITH MY LAPTOP (OR ITUNES TO BE SPECIFIC ),PLAYING MY BEATLES PLAYLIST AND DOWNLOADING DELARA’S NEW ALBUM,A THOUGHT CROSSED MY MIND,”WHAT IF I PUT THE SONGS OF PUPIL/MONGOLS,SANDWICH,AND MARKUS HIGHWAY TOGETHER IN ONE FOLDER?”
HMMM,WHY NOT?
I REMEMBER READING IN ONE OF GEORGE HARRISON’S INTERVIEW (POST -BEATLES THAT IS),HE WAS ASKED WHAT WOULD THE BEATLES SOUND LIKE ? AND HE REPLIED THAT THEIR INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS WOULD SOUND LIKE THE BEATLES OF OLD ( JOHN LENNON AND THE PLASTIC ONO BAND,PAUL MCCARTNEY AND THE WINGS,GEORGE HARRISON AND THE TRAVELING WILBURY’S AND RINGO STARR).
WITH THE POPULARITY OF SANDWICH AT IT’S PEAK,AND PUPIL NOT FAR BEHIND PLUS MARKUS HIGHWAY’S BIG SPLASH ON THE MUSIC SCENE,IT WAS THE PERFECT TIMING FOR ME TO RECONNECT WITH THE HEADS.
SO I COMPILED THEIR SONGS,CHOOSE WHICH SONG SOUNDS CLOSEST TO THE HEADS LAST ALBUM (CARBONSTEREOXIDE).WHAT CAME OF THAT EXPERIMENT IS A 15-TRACK COMPILATION.
SANDWICH’S MANILA,SUNBURN,SELOS,PHOTOCOPY,BETAMAX;PUPIL’S KALAWAKAN,NASAAN KA?,MATADOR,GAMU-GAMO,SHE TALKS TO TREES,ANIMAL LOVER,TEACHER’S PET;MONGOLS’ BULAKBOL AND MARKUS HIGHWAY’S DRIVETHRU AND RAKENROL ALL MADE THE LIST.
SO,WHERE THE HELL IS BUDDY’S CONTRIBUTION.WELL,YES THAT’S MY DILEMMA.SINCE I DON’T CONSIDER CAMBIO’S VOCALIST KRIS GORRA-DANCEL AS PART OF THE E-HEADS (ACTUALLY SHE WAS THE ONE WHO REPLACED ELY-PLEASE TRANSPOSE EP ),ME,BEING A PURIST,I JUST DROPPED CAMBIO’S SONG’S.WHO KNOWS BUD’S MIGHT FORM A BAND LATER ON WITH HIM AS THE FRONTMAN/VOCALIST.BUT FOR NOW,I’LL STICK WITH PUPIL/MONGOLS,SANDWICH,AND MARKUS HIGHWAY.
MY NEXT AGENDA WAS THE TITLE OF MY SO-CALLED “NEW” E-HEADS ALBUM.DIFFERENT TITLES LIKE “E-HEADS2.0,KALAYAAN,VOLT IN, AND PAST MASTERS” ALL CAME TO MIND BUT IN THE END,I CHOSE “BWELTA”,WHICH MEANS WERE IN FOR A PAYBACK FROM THE HEADS.ISANG MATINDING HAGUPIT/BANAT MULA KINA ELY,LEMONS,BUDS AT MARKUS!
LO AND BEHOLD,AFTER A MONTH CAME THE NEWS THAT THE ERASERHEADS ARE BACK.

ERASERHEADS REUNITE!

July 20th, 2008 by doctorj201

IT’S NICE TO HEAR THAT THE FAB FOUR FROM STATE U HAS DECIDED TO REUNITE,EVENTHOUGH IT’S JUST ONLY A ONE-NIGHT AFFAIR.I GUESS THEY BURIED THE HATCHET AND LET BYGONES BE BYGONES.THEY’RE BANDMATES BEFORE ANYWAYS SO RENEWING OR REKINDLING THEIR FRIENDSHIP ( FORGED IN KALAYAAN ) WON’T BE A BIG PROBLEM AT ALL.AND THE TWO MILLION PER HEAD TF FOR A 45 MINUTE GIG DOESN’T HURT,EITHER.
YOUNGER FANS AND THOSE ON THE CONO SIDE PROBABLY WOULD ASK E-HEADS FANATICS, “WHAT’S THE FUSS ABOUT THE HEADS?”
HMMM?! I GUESS THEY’RE RIGHT.BAMBOO WOULD OUTPERFORM AND OUTSING ELYBOY ANYTIME OF THE DAY ‘COZ HE DOESN’T HAVE THE VOCAL RANGE OF BAMBOO; THE ITCHYWORMS DRUMMER (JAZZ NICHOLAS?) IS WAY COOLER THAN RAIMS WITH THE DRUM SET;BUD’S IS OKAY BUT NOT THAT GREAT. AND MARCUS?,WELL YOU KNOW MARCUS, RIGHT? HE’S A FREAK! ONSTAGE,AS GROUP THEY’RE TAME AS COMPARED TO KAMIKAZEE.
SO,WHAT’S THE FUSS ABOUT THE E-HEADS?
LYRICS AND MUSIC.
AS A GROUP,THEY’RE GREAT AT IT! CLEVER WORD-PLAY THAT TOUCHES ON THE ISSUES OFLOVE,SEXUALITY,LIFE, AND DRUGS.
MARCUS’ BLUES-INSPIRED GUITAR WORKS ,LEMON’S PUNK/RAP INFLUENCED BANGING, BUDDY’S COOL BASS TUNES AND ELY’S WITTY LYRICS DID THE TRICK FOR THE HEADS.FROM LUZON TO MINDANAO,EVERYBODY’S SHAKIN’ THEIR HEAD FOR EVERY DISH THEY SERVED US.THEIR SONGS TOUCHED US,IT TRANSCENDED AGE AND SOCIAL STATUS.EVEN THE GREAT SENATOR TITO SOTTO COULDN’T RESIST THE CHARM OF THE E-HEADS AS HE DIPPED HIS FILTHY HAND ON THE E-HEADS POPULARITY.
